Northumberland Coast AONB
The Northumberland Coast is one of the most beautiful and dramatic coastlines in Britain. Stretching from just north of Berwick-on-Tweed in the north, it extends southward to the mouth of the River Tyne at Tynemouth.
It is a varied and contrasting refine, possessing a wealth of geological features and landforms, a wealth of history and heritage, the roots of Christanity in Britain and a multitude of castles and historic sites. It is renowned as a Kingdom of Coast, Castles and Christianity.
In its northern stretches it includes the magnificent treasures of the Holy Island of Lindisfarne and the Farne Islands, already featured in separate sections on this website. However, there are many more coastal beauties and panoramas to enjoy including the beaches at Druridge Bay, Alnmouth, Newbiggin, Blyth, Seaton Sluice, Whitley Bay, Cullercoats and Tynemouth. Some are wonderfully deserted, whilst others near to the populations of Tyne and Wear are more popular with visitors. Another famous beauty spot is St Mary’s Island with its lighthouse.
Castles appeal to people of all ages… and the only problem along the Northumberland Coast is being spoilt for choice. Berwick-on-Tweed has its own particular and unusual defensive fortifications whilst not too far inland iare Etal Castle and Ford Castle. However to many visitors it is the dramatic settings of Lindisfarne Castle and Bamburgh Castle that provide the most appeal. However there are numerous other castles to choose from including the magnificent Warkworth Castle and Tynemouth Castle. The area is also rich in churches and important religious sites sic as Lindisfarne Priory and Tynemouth Priory.
There is a wealth of museums and other attractions awaiting your discovery. Our new photoguide to the Northumberland Coast, featured elsewhere on this website, provides a wonderful visual representation of this magnificent coastline and an ideal basis for planning your visit and exploration of this unique region.
