Lindisfarne – A Magical Island
Lindisfarne, the Holy Island, is a truly magical place. Located just a short distance off the magnificent Northumberland Coast, it is a tombolo, an island at high tide, but accessible by its famous Causeway road at low tide. This tiny island with its extensive sand dunes and sandy beaches, plus its dramatic outcrops of the dark whinstone crags, provides a timeless atmosphere and appeal that is almost like stepping back in time.
Its two most prominent historic visitor attractions are the fairytale Lindisfarne Castle and the impressive ruins of Lindisfarne Priory. They are both very popular with tourists, as is the informative centre at the
priory.
There are two other very important places to visit on the island… these are the Lindisfarne Heritage Centre, the Gospels Garden and Lindisfarne Mead.
You can travel to Lindisfarne either by road at low tide or by boat trip from Seahouses. The latter arrives at the small pretty harbour which possesses excellent views of the castle, village and the mainland coast… even the distant Bamburgh Castle.
It is an unspoilt area where the riches of wildlife, mainly birds and sea-life are prominent, but where these and rare plants are protected within a nature reserve and AONB.
The village itself is quaint and full of character and possesses a range of services for the visitor including accommodation and eating establishments. Millions have made the pilgrimage here over the centuries so the island is well prepared for looking after its guests.
